Ingredients:
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup rice wine or semi-dry sherry
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 3 tablespoons or so chopped green onion
- 3 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
- 2 teaspoons Asian 5-spice powder
- Place all ingredients in a small saucepan and heat on low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let cool.
- Use as a marinade for chicken and shrimp; it's especially tasty. The marinade also works well with beef, pork and vegetables. Marinate food - covered and in the refrigerator - for up to 4 hours (shrimp for only about 30 minutes).
- Use as a glaze for grilled foods: Set aside about 1/3 of the mixture before using the remainder as a marinade. Simmer about 5 minutes to reduce. Brush on grilled food when it's almost done cooking.
