Summer musings and foraged berries.

It's finally seeming like summer again here in London. We had a really warm spell in June but since have seen nothing but cold, rainy weather - until this week. Finally, it's warm and sunny out, and my own harvest is picking up. The most delicious tomatoes I've ever tasted are now ripe, and the blackberry bushes on the Hampstead Heath are finally displaying their bounty.

I spent last weekend picking a tonne of blackberries, which were quickly frozen or turned into crumble and jam.

The tomatoes have gone well with almost everything - but they are so bursting with sharp, well-rounded, and meaty flavour that they are best eaten alone.

*****

Blackberry Apple Crumble

Topping:
Lots of oats
a few spoonfuls of flour
a splash of maple syrup
a few tablespoons of butter
nutmeg, cinnamon, etc.

Fruit:
1 apple per person
A handful of berries per person
a spoon of flour
a splash of maple syrup

Mix the topping together with a wooden spoon or with your fingers until sticky and well mixed.

Chop the apples and toss with flour, maple, and berries. Spoon into little ramekins (or a big one) and top with the topping. Bake at 400 (200C) for 20 minutes or until golden brown and syrupy.
