Sometimes I will pull out all the stops and do him a sumptuous roast chicken ready for when my 5 year old comes home from school, perhaps a creamy Tiramissu made with Tia Maria (Recipe to be shared later along with my drool worthy photos) an a wonderful piece of cheese with some crackers for later on in the evening, perhaps a ripe brie or some Colston Bassett Stilton which has become a firm favorite in our household.
Today as he prepares for work, my 4 year old son has just emptied his porridge bowl, his sister has eaten her mini raisin weetabix & I am sat with a cup of fruit tea wondering what delights I can make in the kitchen today that will leave the house smelling wonderful and the dinner this evening tasting even better.
Leftovers would be one suggestion, I made a pork casserole yesterday in the slow cooker whilst out spending the day at the gym then hiking in the park, coming home to the smells of dinner waiting on a cold crisp January day was outstanding. I started by browning some pork shoulder in a frying pan (no oil needed) and added the browned meat to the slow cooker, to this I added diced onion, leeks, potato, 3 bay leaves and courgette, some Italian seasoning, black pepper, a chicken stock cube and added water to about 3/4 of the way up the pot. 8 hours later when returning home I removed the lid, added half a small pot of double cream, left it to reduce for 45 minutes in the slow cooker with the lid off and then served with crusty sourdough white bread as a delicious Saturday supper.
Even this morning the kitchen still has the warming smell (perhaps the fact that the dishwasher did not get turned on last night when i went to bed has something to do with it) So perhaps leftovers tonight as it was too good to pop in the freezer for another day, however I may use this as a starter and for the main course make something more substantial.
A trip to the supermarket seems like a good idea, see what talks to me as I wander round with my basket that will make for a delicious second course. Once i have had some breakfast of course!
