Halo-halo is from the Filipino root word halo which literally means mix. It’s called halo-halo since it’s a mixture of shaved ice, milk, several colorful fruits and beans, and oftentimes with ice cream on top of it. Some consider this Filipino recipe as a dessert but there are also those who eat this as snack.
Ice cream is popular here in the Philippines but halo-halo is the most eaten snack during the hot tropical summers here in country. But since this recipe is so deliciously sweet, it’s eaten all over the county as a dessert even during the wet and rainy season. If you think you don’t want this food because you live in a cold country. But believe me when I say that lots of Filipinos eat halo-halo in cold air-conditioned places like malls and restaurants. In fact, lots of food chains here offer this Filipino dessert or snack throughout the year.
You might already be too excited there to taste this dessert. Don’t worry cause you can prepare this recipe from the comfort of your own home. Here is the list of ingredients that you need (good for four servings):
- 1 piece sweetened banana cut in 1 inch cubes
- 1 cup young, fresh, and shredded coconut meat
- 1 cup leche flan cut in 1 inch cubes
- 1 cup gelatin cut in 1 ½ cubes
- 1 cup canned or sweetened jackfruit
- ½ cup sweet corn
- 1 cup cooked and glutinous sweet purple yams
- 2 cups shaved or crushed ice
- 2 cups evaporated milk
- 4 scoops of ice cream (usually vanilla or ube flavored)
- ½ cup corn flakes
Don’t get too excited and just mix all the ingredients. Though it’s called “halo-halo”, there’s a proper way to prepare and mix all the ingredients:
1) Get four tall glasses.
2) Divide the ingredients in four equal parts. Add ¼ cup of shaved ice in each of the glasses.
3) Layer by layer, add ¼ of each ingredient from sweetened banana to sweet purple yams basing from the list above.
4. Pour ¼ cup of evaporated milk in each of the glasses.
5. Top each halo-halo wth one scoop of ice cream then sprinkle with corn flakes.
