How to Make Upma

Learn, how to make upma - A South Indian break fast.


Upma is very well known south Indian recipe. It contains less oil so, good for diet conscious people. 


Preparation time - 10 minutes
Cooking time - 15 minutes
Serves - 4


Ingredients to make Upma:


2 cups semolina
1 cup whipped curd
Salt to taste
3 cup water
5 to 6 green chilies - finely chopped
1 big onion - finely chopped
1/2 small carrot - finely chopped
1/4 cup boiled green peas
8 to 10 cashew nut
10 to 15 curry leaves
1 tea spoon crushed ginger
2 table spoon finely chopped fresh coriander leaves
1 table spoon urad dal
1 tea spoon mustard seeds
2 table spoon oil



Ingredients to make coconut chutney:

1 grated coconut without brown portion
1/2 cup roasted dadiya chana
1 cup curd
2 green chilies
1 tea spoon crushed ginger
8 - 10 curry leaves
Salt to taste

For Tadka:

1 table spoon oil
1/2 tea spoon mustard seeds
1/4 tea spoon hing
5 - 6 curry leaves

  1. Take oil in a pan. Heat it and add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds crackles add cashew nut, urad dal, green chilly and ginger cook till cashews are light brown, now add onion and stir fry till onion become transparent. Add carrot and stir fry for 2 minutes again. At last add semolina - sooji and roast till semolina turns to light brown.   
  2. Mix salt, water and curd together and add it to semolina mixture. Add boiled green peas and cook till semolina absorbs water. 
  3. Garnish with coriander. Hot Upma is ready to serve. Serve Upma with fresh coconut chutney.
Method to make Coconut chutney:
  1. Crush all the ingredients of chutney together.
  2. Heat oil in an another small pan, add mustard seeds and let it crackle. Add hing and curry leaves in it and spread over chutney.
