Palitaw: A Satiating Filipino Snack

Palitaw is a rice cake famously eaten here in the Philippines. The recipe is originally created by Filipinos with no influence from other countries. It is made of ground glutinous rice and shaped as flat discs.

I have learned this Filipino snack when I was around 10 years old and it’s really easy to prepare. Moreover, palitaw is really satiating so if you’re really hungry, it is the best snack for you.

Here are the ingredients needed:
  • 2 cups glutinous rice (ground)
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup roasted sesame seeds

Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to prepare this Filipino snack:

1) Mix the water and glutinous rice flour until the mixture forms a dough.
2) Form a ball-shaped figure using two tablespoons of dough.
3) Flatten the figure using your palms.
3) Boil water in a cooking pot.
4) Drop the flattened dough in the boiling water.
5) Remove the flattened dough once it starts to float.
6) Allow the dough to dry and cool. This dough is now the rice cake.
7) Roll the rice cake in the grated coconut.
8) Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

You can now place the rice cakes in a serving platter. Palitaw is served with white sugar since it is dipped in sugar when eating. Eat your Filipino snack and enjoy!
