The theme: Food Trucks
The highlight: Grilled Cheese from Gorilla Cheese
The goodies: Grilled Cheese, Cod Tacos and Dukkah Lamb
I am pleased to say that Toronto, and Ontario actually, has finally embraced the Gourmet Food Truck revolution that has become part of the everyday eating hangouts of many Americans. It started with your good old street meat, and turned into a business that currently allows many underdog cooks demonstrate their ability to make just any type of food taste great, even if coming from a truck.
On a very cold Friday afternoon, I convinced a few colleagues of mine to come venture with me into the world of Food Trucks. Fighting the cold was a challenge on its own, however indulging in delicious and unique dishes was worth every frozen finger.
Our first indulgence was The Binder from Gorilla Cheese.
This grilled cheese was a scrumptious sandwich with of at least 3 kinds of cheese on a perfectly grilled, fresh huge piece of whole wheat bread. It came out very hot right out of the truck, warming my hands and tummy as I bit into every piece of ooey-gooey goodness.
The cod tacos from El Gastronomo Vagabundo, was another impressive dish from the bunch. They came with some nice lightly battered deep-fried cod, topped with mango hot sauce, cabbage, sour cream and green apple slaw. Although the hot sauce was the kicker here, I would say the quality and taste of the fish was the hit. I would have wanted a bit more sour cream to balance off the heat from the mango sauce, however all in all this was a great dish from the "El Gastro".
The end of my Food Truck experience consisted of going back to "El Gastro" and indulging in yet another one of their great dishes. Their Dukkah lamb with fennel and mint relish was a delicious way to clean my palate from the heat of the tacos and a nice way to finish the truck stop.
Dukaah is an exotic Middle Eastern blend of ground hazelnuts, toasted sesame seeds, ground cumin and coriander. Although I found the Dukkah crusting on the lamb too thick, I realized that the star of the show was the fennel with the mint relish! That was a great combination.
I would recommend El Gastro to either do a much lighter version of the Dukkah, or serve grilled lamb instead to let the juices from the mint relish really compliment the earthy taste of this meat.
Be sure to check out Ontario Food Trucks Facebook page for more information on the trucks, their food and most importantly, their whereabouts!
Until next time Foodies!
