There are various ways on how to cook rice like frying rice. But the most common method of cooking rice is steaming it. Steamed rice is one of the easiest Filipino recipes that even a child can do. Although cooking rice the Filipino way is simple, our steamed rice is indeed delicious. Its taste is unique among the steamed rice of other Asian countries.

Below are the requirements for steaming rice:

  • Rice
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Rice cooker (You may also steam rice using other cooking devices like microware. However, a rice cooker is the most commonly used cooking equipment for preparing rice)
The ratio of rice to water is one-to-one. Thus, if you need to cook one cup of rice you’ll also need one cup of water.  Let’s use one cup or rice for this example. Here are the five simple steps that you should follow in order to make your steamed rice.

1) First, put the one cup of rice in the bowl. You need to wash it with tap water so as to remove excess starch. Some wash their rice three times. But I suggest that you wash your rice once in order to retain the nutrients.
2) Drain the water and transfer the rice into the rice cooker. Since we used once cup of rice, let’s pour a cup of water.

Tip: The volume of a cooked rise increases by 300%. Thus, if you’re cooking a cup of rice, make sure to have a container that can hold a minimum of four cups.

3) Bring the water to a boil. Once it has boiled, turn the heat down for 15-20 minutes or until water has been fully absorbed by water.

4) After 15-20 minutes, you may now turn of the heat. However, you should not lift the lid of the rice cooker yet. Just let the rice ‘settle’ for another 10 minutes. This avoids having dry rice on the top and wet rice at the bottom.

5) Once 10 minutes is up, you may now lift the lid and take a fork to fluff the rice.
Your steamed rice is now ready to be served with a main dish.

Note: Leftover rice can be kept inside the refrigerator and can be made into fried rice the following day.
