Calamares Recipe: Fried Squid to Spice Up your Meals

Calamares is a recipe that was brought in the Philippines by the Spaniards during the Spanish colonization period. But just like spagehetti, originally an Italian cuisine, we also have a Filipino way of preparing this main dish.

Calamares is basically a dish of fried squid rings. Though there are many ways of preparing squid like adobo or sizzling squid sisig, frying is one of the most delicious ways of preparing this seafood.

It has been my favorite since I was a student but my mom didn’t have enough time to prepare this dish for us since she was busy with work. She preferred to cook squid adobo since it’s easier than making calamares and I didn’t have a choice since I didn’t have any source of income yet at that time.

Right now, since I already have a work, I spent some time and money learning how to prepare delicious calamares. Here are the necessary ingredients for my recipe:

calamares
  • 1 kilo of squid
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 whole eggs
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Vetsin
  • Cooking oil

The cooking of calamares is relatively easy. For those not used to cooking, just be a little more patient because having calamares as your main dish can really spice up your meal. Prepare your delicious main dish using the following steps:

1) Clean the squid by removing the ink sacs and head and by peeling off the outer purple skin.

2) Cut the squid in ½ inch squid rings.

3) Beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper

4) Season the flour with salt, pepper, and vetsin. The flour and the breadcrumbs must be in different containers.

5) Dip the squid rings in the beaten eggs.

6) Coat the squid rings with the flour.

7) Coat again the squid rings with the breadcrumbs.

8) Heat the oil in a large frying pan.

9) Add the squid rings a few pieces at a time. Wait for around one minute or until golden brown.

10) Remove the rings and drain on paper towels.

Once excell oil is removed, you can already enjoy your dinner with calamares as your  main dish.

Tip: You may also dip calamares in mayonnaise.
